Rope gives way, 3 soldiers fall from sky

The army jawans are undergoing treatment at Army Hospital Research And Referral in New Delhi, IBT reported.

The incident raises serious concern on the safety measures being carried out while conducting such kind of drills.

"Slithering operations have been suspended till the cause of accident is known". The Army Day is celebrated on January 15. The accident happened when the army men were descending from the chopper by means of a rope; the rope broke down abruptly and the soldiers plummeted to the ground.

The "insertion" and "extraction" of commandos is generally carried out by the helicopters in special operations.

The drill is practised relentlessly as stealth and speed is of paramount importance to retain the element of surprise. As the soldiers start to descent, the rope is seen slipping off the helicopter which results in a free fall. It led to the rope breaking away and the paratroopers fell on each other before crashing down on the ground. It is a practice which army commands usually do while going for an operation in a hostile area.

The incident took place on Tuesday and involved an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv. Since there was a malfunction in the aircraft's boom, "A 2-member investigating team from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has come on Wednesday to probe the matter", said a source in the HAL.
