Residents evacuated amid Mount Mayon eruption warning

Philippine authorities raised its alert level of the Mayon volcano on Sunday for the second time in less than 24 hours from "increasing unrest" to "increased tendency towards eruption" within weeks or even days.

Phivolcs has raised alert level 2 over Mayon, which means that the cause of the restiveness could be magmatic, leading possibly "to more phreatic eruptions or eventually to hazardous magmatic eruptions". This is the second phreatic eruption of Mayon which was recorded following a similar phenomenon which lasted for nearly two hours on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's eruption unleashed ash, rocks and sulfuric odor, and was followed by rumbling sounds and a faint glow in the crater, according to Phivolcs.

Residents have been urged to protect against inhaling the ash by wearing masks or covering their noses and mouths with damp cloths.

Earlier, Phivolcs said in a separate advisory that the Mayon Volcano also had a phreatic eruption at 8:49 a.m. that lasted for 5 minutes. It last erupted in 2014.

Mayon's biggest eruption was in 1841, when lava flows buried a town, killing 1,200 people. It also said aircraft must avoid flying close to the volcano's summit.

Sto Domingo town mayor Herbie Aguas, on the other hand, ordered that residents within the slopes of the volcano who might be experiencing ashfalls should take precautionary measures against inhalation and possible roof collapse due to accumulated heavy ash and rain.

Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum said the volcano may be due for an eruption as it had been displaying abnormal behaviour for several month.

Mayon, one of the most active volcanoes in the country, first spewed ashes, which reached 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) in a phreatic eruption, lasting for nearly two hours on Saturday afternoon.

"We have not reached the critical level", he said in a radio interview.

"The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the 6k-radius Permanent Danger Zone to minimise risks from sudden explosions, rockfall and landslides", Phivolcs said.

Under Alert Level 3, the extension of danger zone in the sector where the crater rim is low will be considered.
