Pakistan Zainab murder: Girl's father speaks of devastating grief

A post-mortem examination conducted on Zainab Ansari suggested that she had been raped and sodomised before being strangled to death.

On Wednesday at least two protesters were killed when police fired into the crowd of demonstrators as they tried to storm a government building in Kasur, a senior police official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The child, named as Zainab, is the eighth minor to have been raped and murdered in Kasur in the past 12 months, police have said. Today, I'm a mother.

'I have nothing else to talk about today, except Zainab, ' she said at the end of a almost two-minute-long clip.

In Lahore, the provincial capital of the state where Kasur is located, protesters blocked a major road connecting the two, causing traffic between them to be suspended.

Reports said she was raped, killed and left in a rubbish pile, before her body was found on January 9.

Five previous victims have been linked to one suspect and police believe Zainab may be number six, but further investigation is needed, reported on Thursday.

Hundreds of protesters hurled projectiles at a hospital, attacked the home of at least one local politician, and complained of police inaction.

Speaking at Islamabad airport as he arrived back in the country, her father Ameen Ansari said, as his wife sobbed: 'We will not bury Zainab until the killer is caught.

Zainab went missing last week while going to a nearby home for Quranic studies.

'Police are not cooperating with us, ' Ghulam Rasool, an uncle of Zainab, said on Thursday.

'We want the culprit to be brought in front of us. The clarification stated that the chief justice had only referred to a news item that had gone viral on social media. Three people were killed during clashes with police.

Civil society, known faces from the entertainment industry and locals in multiple cities have voiced anger and disappoinment in the law enforcement agencies and called for the government to take steps that protect lives of children across the country.

The father, Anees Ansari, who was on a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia with his wife at the time of his daughter's disappearance, spoke after meeting with the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

"(Sharif) has announced 10 million rupees (S$120,000) for anyone giving information about the kidnapper", Punjab government spokesman Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan told Reuters.
