North Korea: Another Nuclear Test in Works, Per Satellite Imagery

For months, the USA president and North Korea's leader have volleyed insults back and forth, most memorably with Trump dubbing Kim Jong Un "rocket man", and Kim responding that Trump was a "dotard".

"I probably have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, " Mr. Trump said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

"I have relationships with people", Trump continued. "I think you people are surprised", said the US President.

The paper reported that Trump did not give any inkling if the two bitter rivals have had established any contacts as of yet. Having underestimated North Korea's nuclear capabilities and misjudged the pace at which it developed its missile technology, the U.S. will be more anxious about containing the missile programme.

Trump has repeatedly insulted the North Korean leader, describing him as mad and a "rocket man". "And we'll be seeing over the next number of weeks and months what happens", Trump said. "I don't want to comment on it-I don't want to comment, I'm not saying I have or I haven't. I just don't want to comment", adding that his attitude towards North Korea is intentional and part of a broader goal. As a result, the North will send an Olympic delegation to games in Pyeongchang and march in the opening and closing ceremonies with its South Korean counterparts.

Kim and Trump have engaged in an increasingly sharp war of words as North Korea's weapons programmes advance, each of them belittling the other.

The two leaders had a 30-minute telephone conversation two days after government officials from the divided Koreas held talks on the North's participation in the Winter Olympic Games in South Korea next month. If the attack goes according to plan, the United States could deny North Korea the ability to research and develop its missile or nuclear programs by destroying elements of it with a kinetic strike.

Trump expressed interest in holding talks with North Korea "under the right circumstances", according to the White House's account of the call, and said that Vice President Mike Pence will head to South Korea's 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. When pushed if this delegation included White House advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump in a recent press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that a list containing the entire delegation would be forthcoming.

When Asked if Kim meant to "drive a wedge" between Seoul and Washington by opening the talks with South Korea, the US President did not rule it out. The two leaders additionally "underscored the importance of continuing the maximum pressure campaign against North Korea", according to the White House.

It was predictable, if disappointing, that North Korea refused this week to discuss its nuclear ambitions.

Since Trump took office in January 2017, his administration has resorted to hawkish and threatening rhetoric against Kim's regime, sent warships and conducted joint military drills with South Korea.

The president added that the talks wouldn't necessarily be held without preconditions.
