Messi shines again as Barca stroll into Cup quarters

Suarez, who has found his groove after a boring start to season, shot the ball high into the net in the 38th minute off a cross from Sergi Roberto to score his fifth goal in four games.

Messi made his way back into the starting line-up after sitting out of Barcelona's draw with Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey.

Suarez pounced on a mistake to make it 4-0 before the interval and leave club-record signing Philippe Coutinho applauding from his seat in the stands. Messi, who also created Barcelona's third goal for Jordi Alba, set his team on its way to a 6-1 aggregate victory with his 21st and 22nd goals in all competitions this season. Messi then turned provider, lobbing a flawless pass behind Celta's back line to meet the run by Alba, who chipped Alvarez to score. The first Barcelona goal was a result of poor goalkeeping by Alvarez while the second was a fine team goal.

Two minutes later the same combination linked up again as Messi poked home another Alba cross. Goals from Leo Baptistao and Gerard Moreno sent Espanyol through.

Ivan Rakitic headed the fifth goal late in the game to round off the five-star performance of Ernesto Varvelde's side.

Sevilla also qualified for the quarterfinals with a 4-1 aggregate win after beating Cadiz 2-1 thanks to goals from Wissam Ben Yedder and Joaquin Correa.

The two La Liga giants both secured their progression from the last-16, with Barca seeing off the challenge of Celta Vigo while Madrid shot down Numencia.

Celta improved a little after half-time but the damage had been done long before Rakitic's header completed the rout, meaning Barca will join Deportivo Alaves, Leganes, Real Madrid, Espanyol, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Valencia in the last eight.
