Let's get physical: Trump to undergo first medical examination as president

United States president Donald Trump is in "excellent health", Dr Ronny Jackson said in a statement after he gave the president a medical examination.

"The president's exam at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center went exceptionally well. The President is in excellent health and I look forward to briefing some of the details on Tuesday".

Two months before the November 2016 election, Trump released a five-paragraph letter from his longtime physician, Dr. Harold Bornstein, who concluded that Trump "is in excellent physical health".

Nearly always, the physician conducting the exam makes a general assessment of the President's health, and declares him fit to serve in the office.

When he was running for office, Trump released a glowing report from his personal physician in NY, who said Trump would be "the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency".

Presidents are not required to undergo medical exams or tests of their physical or mental fitness for the job.

No, the exam will not evaluate Trump's mental health.

The public report from Trump's upcoming exam was also likely to be short and sweet, said George Annas, head of the Center for Health Law, Ethics and Human Rights at Boston University School of Public Health. Trump has said he takes statin, a drug created to lower cholesterol levels.

Trump has claimed his physical health has always been strong. Past presidents have received a "fit to serve as president" stamp of approval following the exam.

And his diet isn't known to have changed from the high-calorie dishes he has favored in the past: well-done steak with ketchup, meatloaf, hamburgers, vanilla ice cream, salads with blue cheese dressing and chocolate cake.

Trump, 71, is the oldest person elected president and has made public his affinity for fast food and disdain for exercise outside of golf.

He told them that he expects it to go well and that he would be surprised if it did not.

The examination was conducted at Walter Reed by Jackson, a U.S. Navy rear admiral, who is the president's personal physician. The results have most often been a general recounting of the president's height, weight, cholesterol levels and the like.
