Jon Gruden: 'Good chance' he coaches Raiders

Jon Gruden: 'Good chance' he coaches Raiders

Gruden appeared on Wingo & Golic Wednesday and finally addressed reports that he was expected to replace former head coach Jack Del Rio, who was sacked on Sunday after the team's 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. "Today was kind of a microcosm of our season", Del Rio said after the Raiders' 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

"No validity to that, none, zero", Gruden said to that ownership rumors.

When asked, Gruden would not comment specifically about the Oakland Raiders, saying he would rather not speculate because there is not any news at this time to report.

In all likelihood, Jon Gruden will leave ESPN's "Monday Night Football" booth and return to the sideline to coach the Oakland Raiders, but, because that's not a done deal yet, he'll continue to work his TV gig and that presents a potential conflict. His name still is in the mix every year when National Football League head coaching jobs open up, but he's seemed content to stay in the booth.

He said, "I understand it's a results business". Guys want to bounce ideas off me.

"You can line anybody up against me and I'm going to throw against them", Carr said.

But there's still one other factor that may make this opportunity too good for Gruden to refuse: The Raiders are set to move to Las Vegas before the 2020 season. "I'm here to help people". He stuck around for three more seasons as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator under Raheem Morris, but it was hardly a successful stint. He would go on to become the youngest head coach to win a Super Bowl in his first season with the Buccaneers after the trade. Gruden shot down that report.

Long snapper Jon Condo has been with the Raiders organization since 2006 and played in one winning season, under Jack Del Rio in 2016. They both worked for the Green Bay Packers in 1994, when Gruden was in his a year ago as wide receivers coach and McKenzie joined the Packers' personnel department.

According to New York Post's Hannah Withiam, the Raiders seem primed to make Gruden an offer he can't refuse. Gruden could bring stability and balance to a franchise in desperate need to get back on track with stars Derek Carr and Khalil Mack leading the way.

It should also be noted that Gruden now works for ESPN and presumably Schefter would not make such a proclamation without some assurance that his statement was accurate. "As a player, we didnt play up to our expectations, and he had to pay the price".
