Iran rejects Trump demands for renegotiation of nuclear deal

USA officials say the president will work with European partners to try to broker an agreement limiting Iran's ballistic missiles activities.

"Iran's response will be severe and all consequences of this hostile act will be the responsibility of the United States", it said. The sight of the protests reportedly made the president more reluctant than ever to extend the life of the nuclear deal, which he scorns as an appeasement of an Islamic regime that funds terrorist groups, armed militants and rebel factions across the Middle East and wider region, while pursuing ballistic missile programmes that put Israel and other American allies in harm's way. This would presumably save President Trump from continuing to either defy his own views of the JCPOA or court global condemnation by decertifying it, only to take little or no further action against it.

A second diplomat said: "The date of the meeting is not a coincidence".

While Trump approved the sanctions waiver, the Treasury Department announced new, targeted sanctions against 14 entities and people, including the head of Iran's judiciary, Sadeq Amoli Larijani, a close ally of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

One thing that may influence Trump's decision-making on both compliance certification and sanctions waivers is a meeting that took place last week between representatives of the White House and the Senate to discuss the JCPOA and broader United States strategies toward the Islamic Republic.

"This is a last chance", Trump warned in a statement that outlined several tough new rules on Iran.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow has a "very negative stance" on the decisions and comments made by Trump about Iran, according to state news agency Sputnik.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Nobakht said the Islamic Republic has made various preparations for the possible withdrawal of the USA from the JCPOA.

One proposal for amending the deal is to automatically re-impose, or "snap back", suspended sanctions if Iran commits certain actions, possibly including things unrelated to its nuclear program. A decision to withhold a waiver would have effectively ended the deal that limits Iran's nuclear programme. So far, Trump hasn't followed through on his promise to end the Iran nuclear deal.

The president wants US Congress to modify a law that reviews US participation in the nuclear deal to include "trigger points" that, if violated, would lead to the United States reimposing its sanctions, the official said. European officials separately said they did.

The other signatories to the deal - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - and the European Union, which oversaw the talks, were watching carefully. While the USA and other world powers rolled back economic restrictions on Tehran, the Iranians severely curtailed their enrichment of uranium and other nuclear activity.

Britain, France and Germany had called on Trump on Thursday to uphold the pact.

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Friday it was a "desperate attempt" to undermine a "solid" deal.

Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign affairs representative, reiterated the European view that Tehran was living up to its obligations under the deal.

"The sanctions Trump had to waive Friday dealt with Iran's central bank".

As he did in October, Trump is likely to decline to certify to Congress that the nuclear agreement is in America's best interest.

"The president's decision is to waive once more nuclear sanctions that the terms of the JCPOA require" to remain in the Iran deal, a senior administration official said on Friday. Those moves are meant to increase pressure without abrogating the nuclear accord that Iran reached with the USA and five other world powers, according to two administration officials familiar with the matter.
