Internet mocks OR state over new self-service gas law

A new law in OR allowing some gas stations to dump the attendant in favor of self-serve stations has caused quite the uproar across the state.

OR just left New Jersey as the only state whose residents are not out in the cold. pumping their own gas, that is.

KTVL News 10 asked its fan base what they thought about the new law on its Facebook page, and the number one complaint seemed to be that the industrious beavers do not know how to pump gas.

One woman wrote: "I don't even know HOW to pump gas and I am 62, [a] native Oregonian..."

"I say No too many creeper out there An it will take a lot of jobs away they need their jobs and I don't feel safe out there ethier!" "I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and nearly died doing it", one Oregonian wrote.

The law allows drivers in a handful of OR counties to pump their own gas. I will literally park at the pump and wait until someone pumps my gas. Until now, OR and New Jersey were the only two states to have made it illegal. But in OR, where until now it has been illegal for people to touch the petrol pumps themselves, the change has caused the general public to collectively lose their shit in the only way they know how: in the Facebook comments. It simply gives retailers in sparsely populated communities, or about half of the states' counties, the option to do so - and some have said they will continue their business practices regardless of the law. Now they protect me from transients who were otherwise ready to strike at me the moment I exited my vehicle to pump gas in my office attire in 5 degree MI weather.

In 1951, when OR first passed the law mandating gas station attendants, the rule made sense.

Many stations in OR said they plan to keep an attendant on standby.

Disability Rights Oregon, however, raised concerns that the law would have unintended consequences for people with disabilities in rural counties.

Something obvious to one country may be completely foreign to another and it seems filling up your vehicle yourself is one of those things, as a recent law change in OR has revealed. Many people are not capable of knowing how to pump gas and the hazards of not doing it correctly. Yes, these jobs are low wage, but they still can get people employed overall.
