In Iceland, It's Now Illegal To Pay Women Less Than Men

As of yesterday, Iceland is now the first country in the world to enforce equal pay laws between men and women.

The new law came into effect on Monday after being announced on International Women's Day on March 8, 2017 receiving support by Iceland's center-right coalition government as well as the opposition. Those failing to comply or meet with standards will be fined.

The newly initiated legislation brings Iceland just one step closer to reaching its ambitious goal of total pay equity by 2020. But the country still had a persistent pay gap just over 16 percent as of past year.

The United Nations says women are still paid less than men in every country in the world.

Speaking at the Global Leaders" Meeting in 2015, former Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson said: "Men can not sit idly by when issues such as gender-based violence and the gender pay gap are being discussed. The report uses markers like economic opportunity, political empowerment and health and survival to compare the state of gender equality in a given country.

Iceland has made it illegal to pay women less than men.

"Ample evidence shows that women work as much as men and are still paid less", she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Motherhood leads many women to cut back on their hours working outside the home and to gravitate toward lower-paying jobs with less demanding work schedules, according to an October 2017 story in The Economist.

The SNP said it would also call for a legislation change at Westminster so that any employer who loses an equal pay claim takes "appropriate action" on the results.

The new legislation, which was supported by both the government and the opposition in a parliament made up of nearly 50 percent women (probably not a coincidence), is created to help the country close the gender pay gap completely by the year 2020.

The new legislation was approved by the country's parliament, which is comprised of roughly 50 percent women. Yemen was the lowest-ranked of the 144 countries, while top best performers included Norway, Finland, Rwanda and Sweden - showing that Scandinavian and Nordic countries are doing pretty well compared to the rest of the world.
