'I'm getting better,' El-Zakzaky tells journalists in Abuja

Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has made his first public appearance in over two years.

Speaking on the issue, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Lai Muhammad stated earlier that El-Zakzaky was still being held on the grounds of national security.

But the DSS and his lawyer, Femi Falana both dispelled the stories, and affirmed that he is still alive.

El-Zakzaky wore a white gown with a turban. He is later driven away in a Toyota Prado SUV.

Zakzaky told journalists on Saturday at the DSS headquarters in Abuja that he was well and he thanked Nigerians for sustaining his life with endless prayers.

"I am feeling better, the security [officers] have allowed me to see my doctor, my personal doctor".

"So it was my own doctors who examined me. I am getting better, thanks for all your prayers".

Reacting separately, he said the bullet in El-Zakzaky's wife's body is yet to be removed.

Zakzaky was arrested in December 2015, after his Shi'ite group clashed with an Army Convoy which included the chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai.

At least 347 members Shiites were killed and secretly buried in mass graves by the army.

The Federal Government has refused to obey the ruling of a Federal High Court which ordered their unconditional release in 2016.

Since the arrest and detention of the group's leader, his followers have been holding a series of protests in some cities in the country, especially Abija calling for his release.
