HBO President Defends 'Game of Thrones' Delay to 2019

Game of Thrones season 8 won't air until 2019, though that's still nothing like the delay between books as fans wait for Martin to finish the sixth in the series.

When the season eight finale of "Game of Thrones" finally airs sometime in 2019 it will be the end for the widely popular. This Emmy Award-winning show is expected to reveal which of the warring families of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros will win the control of the Iron Throne.

Here's what I'll tell you: They take the time they need to do the show at its highest level of quality. They're perfectionists and this is the soonest it can come back at a level of quality that they are comfortable with.

While most shows have ended for years - we're talking X Files, Dancing On Ice and even Twin Peaks - GoT fans were wondering if the show could just get a revival after it ends following its eighth season.

For a show as popular as "Game of Thrones", it's surprising, but also refreshing.

"They start shooting in the spring", Bloys confirmed, before dashing hopes with "It's not going to air in 2018". "We have some really talented writers working on them. But if you ask me, 'Would I rather have Game of Thrones back earlier or would I rather have it be good?' I'd would rather have it be good". We don't want to use it to launch [a new series].

Bloys further confirmed to TVLine that no existing GoT characters will be featured in the prequels, but there may be familiar bloodlines - meaning members of the great houses we've come to know.

Martin is co-writing at least two of the Game of Thrones spinoffs now in the works, and the writers that have been announced as developing these separate projects are Jane Goldman (Kingsman, Stardust), Max Borenstein (Godzilla), Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential), Carly Wray (Mad Men), and Bryan Cogman, who's been writing on Game of Thrones since the first season.
