Govt does away with printing of last page of passport

"The last page contains information such the name of the Father, Mother, Spouse, Address, Emigration Check Required (ECR) and old passport number with date and place of issue of the holder of the passport", the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar confirmed.

The Ministry of External Affairs is considering a series of changes to the Indian passport.

The foreign ministry's decision was announced last week.

Passports are now issued in three colours - government officers are issued white passport, diplomats issued red passports and all others are blue.

New passports for citizens who have Emigration Check Required (ECR) status will have orange cover jackets, instead of the traditional dark blue.

Attacking Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government over reports that passports may no longer serve as the holder's address proof, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said the move shows that government was treating India's migrant workers as "second class" citizens.

According to the ministry, the decision to do away with this page was taken in view of concerns expressed by single parents and those with adopted children about the requirement of details of parents in the passport. There could be some more changes in the passport like colour scheme.

The history of passport dates back to approximately 450 BC when King Artaxerxes I of Persia issued a letter to an official named Nehemiah for travelling beyond his country to Judea, the modern day Israel. Soon, however, those in the ECR category will have orange passports.

The ministry examined the recommendation of the committee in consultation with concerned departments and ministries and came to a conclusion that the last page of the passport would remain blank.

Govt. officials have a white passport, and diplomats have red passports, and this colour combination won't change. In this case too, existing ECR passports will be valid.
