Google quietly purchased a United Kingdom sound tech startup

Google parent Alphabet has quietly acquired a United Kingdom startup focussed on building a technology that can convert any screen into a speaker.

According to regulatory filings, the transaction, as a part of which Google's United Kingdom subsidiary bought all the shares of Redux holding company NVF Tech Ltd., was completed in December past year.

Google has declined to comment on the acquisition, including how much might have been paid for Redux.

The startup called Redux developed the technology called Panel Audio that allowed the panels or screens to produce audio without needing any speakers.

Redux isn't the only company looking to transform screens into speakers. Rather than including conventional speakers, Sony's A1E projects sound using imperceptible vibrations that ripple through the display. Before the acquisition, Redux focused not only on the mobile market, but also on the computing, automotive, and industrial markets, so its technology seems flexible enough to be used in several fields. I am not sure but the display-speaker integration may also help Google improve the haptic feedback on their phones. Redux has demoed the tech with a custom-built PC monitor.

A filing on 13 December shows Google Ireland, ultimately owned by Alphabet, acquired all shareholdings. The notion that Google could do away with dedicated speakers in future Pixel phones sounds like an even more appealing option, however. This technology can free up space in the devices, creating room for batteries or other components.

In the past, the company has demoed its technology on smartphone and tablet displays, and that very well may be Google's core intended use for this exciting technology.

Google has made a concerted effort at CES to promote new features in its series of voice-controlled speakers.
