Google announces improvements coming to its network

The five regions will be added in 2018 beginning in this quarter, and then three subsea cables will be commissioned in 2019.

Laying groundwork for the infrastructure fights of the coming decades, Google has announced that it will be building three underwater cables across the ocean floor in efforts to improve its cloud capabilities.

Its datacentre expansions suggest adoption of Google's public cloud services is showing no signs of slowing, after 2017 saw the firm opening around one new region a month to keep up with demand.

The cables will be completed in 2019.

"Together, these investments further improve our network-the world's largest-which by some accounts delivers 25 percent of worldwide internet traffic", Treynor Sloss wrote.

Google has already been named as an investor in the recently-announced HAVFRUE cable that will connect the United States to Denmark and Ireland, but it is also investing in the Hong Kong-Guam Cable System (HK-G) and Curie, which will run from Chile to Los Angeles. But it is breaking precedent with its longest, fully private long-distance cable, which will stretch 6,200 miles from Los Angeles to Chile, where the company finished a data center in 2015. Google boasts that it will be the first new cable to land in Chile in nearly 20 years and will serve Google customers across Latin America. It said owning the cable will allow it to control the design and construction process, and technical specifications, and once it is deployed make routing decisions that optimize for latency and availability. While each of those companies will have different uses for the cable, Google plans to use it to boost its network's resiliency in the northern Atlantic region.

Despite jumping in head first, Google is not entering the undersea cable business enthusiastically.

Not only will the new deployments benefit more casual users but it'll also benefit other companies who leverage Google's network, such as PayPal.

These three cables will take Google's direct investments up to 11 cables, with the others including: Indigo, PLCN, Tannat, Junior, Monet, FASTER, SJC and UNITY.

The company is planning to share capacity with Facebook on a planned 4,500-mile cable from the East Coast of the U.S.to Denmark, with a pit stop in Ireland.
