French President Emmanuel Macron announces bill to combat fake news

In his presidential campaign, Mr Macron accused Russian Federation and its state-owned media of using hacking and fake news of interfering with the election.

French president Emmanuel Macron was speaking about the subject at the Élysée Palace in Paris on 3 January, where he announced that his administration is to push a new law to combat the onslaught of false information.

"And authorities would be able to remove content or block websites that publish fake news during election cycles".

In a speech Wednesday, Macron said he wants new rules for websites, including more transparency about their sponsored content.

In a move that will be watched closely in the UK, President Emmanuel Macron said dishonest outlets should not be allowed to influence public opinion. Sponsored content would also be limited, according to The Guardian.

Referring to the street protests that have rocked Iran in recent days, Macron said, "We will continue to watch that these rights (freedom of thought and demonstrations) be fully respected".

"That's why I have decided that we will change our legal measures in order to protect democratic life from this fake news".

Turkish Presidential Spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said at a press conference on January 4 that Macron's remarks are based on a "lack of information", if not "prejudice".

Macron's office said the president brought up "the number of victims from the demonstrations", saying he is concerned by the escalating violence in Iran which has led to possible dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Over in the U.S., under mounting political pressure on the issue, Facebook has already said it will increase transparency around political advertising on its platform by requiring ads to include a disclosure stating which page paid for an ad and also give users the ability to visit the advertiser's page to see all the ads they're now running to any audience on Facebook.

French president vows to press on with drive for more integration.
