Florida cut from future offshore drilling

Florida will be state spared from a Trump administration proposal to open almost all U.S. coastlines to offshore drilling, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said on Tuesday.

"The Florida coastline that borders my district is all military testing and training ranges, where they have live fire exercises at super sonic speeds which is a critically unsafe place to be putting oil rigs", Dunn said.

Just a week after the Trump administration proposed offshore drilling expansion, state leaders have responded in opposition. The same Republican governor who, for a hot second, said he supported drilling in the Everglades and advocated for offshore oil drilling even after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion as long as Florida's beaches were protected.

In the face of vocal bipartisan opposition, the Trump administration said Tuesday it would not allow offshore oil and gas drilling in Florida waters, partially rolling back a proposal it unveiled last week.

"We shouldn't be playing politics with the future of Florida", the senator said. He said the coast here relies on tourism too, and offshore drilling poses too much of a risk to our coast. "Because we all like to go out to our beaches and enjoy them", Scott said.

Immediately after Zinke announced his statement, journalists on Twitter began commenting on the optics of the move.

That's the same Rick Scott who banned his state's employees from using the term "climate change", which is ironic because climate change will be the long-term result of the USA drilling and using more oil, causing sea level rises that will inundate more of Florida.

"Opening the Atlantic to seismic testing and drilling jeopardizes our coastal businesses, fishing communities, tourism, and our national security", the letter said.

"Given that President Trump has been strongly encouraging Gov. Scott to run against Sen".

Zinke announced a proposal on January 4 to open almost the entirety of the Outer Continental Shelf for offshore drilling, in areas ranging from Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Zinke cited Florida's tourism industry as reason for the removal.

Now, we aren't reflexively opposed to expanded offshore drilling.

Democratic governors along both coasts unanimously oppose drilling, as have a number of Republican governors, including Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Massachusetts Gov. Charles Baker.

"I think it's courageous, he is bucking the system, but I think it is a very important position to take", said Taylor.

"But I believe the fact that he has the ear of the President....at the end of the day it's good for the Democrat and good for the Republican".

In that same speech, Nelson also announced that he has filed new legislation to implement a permanent ban on drilling off of Florida's coast.

Zinke has said he based his decision on that appeal.
