First Alexa-enabled digital glasses to debut at CES

As yet more evidence that it has become the proving grounds for new technology, the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show saw the introduction of the first augmented reality glasses equipped with Amazon's Alexa smart assistant. The company has launched the Alexa Mobile Accessory Kit to make its new development possible and ultimately broaden the reach of Alexa - taking on Google Assistant, Apple Siri, and Microsoft Cortana. It's for device makers and manufacturers to bring Alexa to a gaggle of on-the-go products, including so-called hearables, headphones, smart watches, fitness devices, and the like. Then, with Alexa's help, you can have the glasses project directions, menus, weather reports, stock quotes, sports scores, social feeds other hands-free alerts, on an image that appears in front of your eyes. The glasses weigh less than 3-ounces, but at around $1,000 they'll weigh heavily on your wallet.

The race to AR smartglasses is on, and the Vuzix Blade could be the first pair you'll actually want to wear.

The Vuzix Blade specs look a little like chunky retro-future sunglasses, the kind of things you'd expect the fashionistas of London's borough of Chelsea to attempt to pull off while snaffling Bellini cocktails as an oligarch's swanky digs.

However, these glasses won't come cheap: They're expected to cost around $1,000 when they hit the market in the second quarter of 2018, according to Bloomberg. Vuzix CEO Paul Travers says that the price will be reduced to $500 by 2019.

The launch of the Alexa-enabled AR glasses would surely be a game changer in the industry.

Companies including Apple and Facebook-owned Oculus are rumoured to also be working on their native AR glasses.

Launched with Amazon Echo speaker family back in 2014, Alexa is now taking on Google Assistant with its recent debut in the market of smartphones.

Google was an early player in AR glasses, launching the Google Glass prototype before pulling back and focusing on adding AR features to its Pixel smartphone and releasing an enterprise-oriented headset.
