FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: Icy travel and frigid temperatures

Three Midlands counties are now under a winter storm warning. We could see an isolated flurry during the evening and overnight.

A bigger issue for the area will be Wednesday night, the coldest night of the week and likely a contender for the coldest of the winter so far.

"There is a moderate to high probability of an accumulating snowfall for much of the region tonight into Wednesday", the weather service said in a press release Tuesday.

"The worst-case scenario has up to an inch of snow across the mountains with a dusting up to 1/4" of snow near Atlanta. Wind chill values between -10 and -20.

In Western Maryland, a winter advisory will go into effect at 7 a.m. and will last until 10 p.m.

A fast-moving cold front will bring "wintry precipitation" to SC on Wednesday.

Sunday night: A chance of rain and snow. Temps north 13 to 20, south 20 to 25.

VDOT pretreated interstates Monday and continued treating interstates, primary and secondary roads Tuesday, said Paula Miller, spokeswoman for VDOT.

Snow will develop in north Georgia late Tuesday afternoon and early evening, Minton said. Columbus will see rain showers transitioning to snow showers after 10 p.m. est lasting overnight through 5 a.m. est and clearing before sunrise.

By Tuesday morning, the front will have cleared the ArkLaTex and everyone will have made the transition to all snow.

A band of snow was located across northwestern and north central Middle Tennessee early this morning, and is forecast to continue moving southeastward during the day. Though snowfall amounts are expected to remain less than 2 inches, impacts to travel could be significant due to temperatures falling into the 20s as the snow occurs. Little accumulation is expected.

The highest snow accumulations are expected to be from the Triangle to the northeast, into the Roanoke Rapids area, with 2 to 3 inches expected in that area.

It's a day with two forecasts.
