Facebook looks for "meaning" with major news feed overhaul

Facebook looks for

The change announced by Zuckerberg follows criticism that Facebook's algorithms may have prioritised misleading news and misinformation in people's feeds, influencing the 2016 American presidential election as well as political discourse in other countries.

"The knee-jerk reaction is to think, 'Oh my God, this is terrible and very bad for publishers, and therefore brands, '" said Mobbie Nazir, chief strategy officer at We Are Social, which counts Netflix as a client.

Advertising should be useful and informative, and/or entertaining and add value to culture, Davey continued.

News outlets that have built a strong bond with readers and viewers through other means will be watching closely, to see whether the size of their audiences - and corresponding advertising dollars - will shrink in the coming months. "For brands, this will mean more doing than saying".

In an exclusive video interview with CNN Tech's Laurie Segall, Facebook VP Adam Mosseri described the move as a "rebalancing" of how Facebook's algorithms rank items in the main feed.

Markets reacted badly to the news, with shares falling more than four per cent overnight.

He wrote: "We built Facebook to help people stay connected and bring us closer together with the people that matter to us". In addition, page posts that generate conversation between people will show higher in news feeds, with video expected to be the winning format here.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained the changes in a Facebook post, noting that the platform had "gotten feedback from our community that public content - posts from businesses, brands and media - is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other".

In the face of the changes, Davey advised brands to do things that people will talk about with their friends and family on Facebook.

That will leave businesses that want publicity on Facebook no choice but to spend more on advertising, and as a result prices will climb, predicted Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, which advises corporate brands on social media. "But longer-term I think this is a positive thing...facilitating interactions between people is what social has always been about before Facebook even existed".

"Like all mediums, Facebook is subject to market conditions and this will find its own "water level" overt time".

Facebook was founded February 4, 2004 Zuckerberg and his three classmates during the training period at Harvard University.

"I was surprised that the numbers were this skewed", Stokes said.

The comments come after widespread media speculation about the impact of social media on how consumers perceive issues and society, and the potentially harmful effects of bogus news and extremist content in news feeds.

Zuckerberg repeated that sentiment in his post Thursday.

"We think that we're now slightly overvaluing how much time people spend on our platform and undervaluing how many meaningful interactions they have with other people", said Mosseri, who oversees News Feed.
