Elderly parents accused of smuggling pot appear in court

An elderly man and woman arrested in Nebraska in December with 60 pounds of assorted marijuana goods the couple claimed were "Christmas presents", were arrested once again on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in Lancaster County, KOLN reported.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports the 80-year-old Patrick Jiron and his 70-year-old wife were arrested Tuesday along Interstate-80 in northeast Nebraska.

They were pulled over for following another vehicle too closely, and after a police K9 smelled narcotics, their pickup truck was searched and a duffel bag with $18,000 in cash and notes consistent with marijuana sales was found.

Barbara Jiron was arrested with her husband. The cash allegedly tested positive for marijuana residue.

Barbara Jiron was cited in the York County matter (not taken into custody due to reported health issues) and Patrick Jiron was arrested (he made bond shortly after and was released from jail).

Patrick and Barbara Jiron, who live in Clearlake, California, are facing a charge of possession of currency believed to have been used in a drug deal. They'll be back in Lancaster County on February.

Authorities say, this time, it's on suspicion of carrying drug money.

"It's my understanding that they were stopped, in the same vehicle we caught them in (a Toyota Tacoma), again on Interstate 80", Lt. Vrbka said.

He also says they will look into whether their fourth amendment rights were violated, which protects from unreasonable searches and seizures. The pair told police that they were driving cross-country to deliver the pot as gifts for relatives and friends in Vermont and Boston.

At that time, the couple was driving on I-80 about 50 miles west of Lincoln in York County, Neb.

The couple have a family connection in Vermont law enforcement, according to the Associated Press; their son, Justin Jiron, is a Chittenden County criminal prosecutor.
