Czechs vote for president; anti-migrant incumbent is favoured

Czechs are voting in a presidential election to decide whether to give a second mandate to incumbent Milos Zeman, a frequent critic of European Union policies and a supporter of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The outcome may influence Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis's chances of finally forming a cabinet as his first attempt to rule in a minority administration is likely to be rejected by parliament next week.

He repeatedly warned that the Czech Republic, home to 3,500 Muslims in a population of 10.5 million, may be the target of a jihadist attack and urged the Czechs to arm themselves for what he calls a possible "super holocaust".

He has also lashed out against the EU's efforts to integrate refugees from the Middle East and Africa, once saying that Muslim migrants will impose Sharia Law, chop off thieves' hands and stone adulterous women in Europe.

In fact he has made the "threat" from the Islamic world - which he calls an "anti-civilisation" - a central theme of his presidency.

The Czechs are casting ballots for a second day in their presidential election.

Among his closest advisers is the founder of the Czech subsidiary of the Russian oil giant Lukoil. "Data also show a deepening rift between cities and the countryside".

"Not everyone has seen these relationships beneficial to the country", says Cameron. Today the country is split like never before over President Zeman and where his true loyalties lie.

Zeman's most serious challenger is Jiri Drahos, 68, a chemical engineer and former head of the Czech Academy of Sciences who has campaigned on anchoring the Czech Republic's place in Europe.

These are the last two points, says the BBC correspondent, those that most divide the nation.

His "astute comments", however, have caused controversy and "shame". Zeman was shocked and was took out of the room by two security guards.

In November 2015, he appeared on stage alongside a raggle-taggle group of Islamophobes and ultra-nationalists. It was an unprecedented appearance for a man who calls himself a leftist.

"I think President Zeman doesn't represent the country as well as he should", she told the. He has difficulties walking connected with diabetes and has at times looked frail.
