Court orders teen soldier-slapper held in custody until end of proceedings

Ahed Tamimi, a 16-year-old who has been called the Palestinian Joan of Arc, has been ordered held in custody for the duration of her trial for hitting two Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.

The Israeli military judge ruled on Wednesday saying, "I found no alternative other than to order her detention in custody until the end of proceedings".

"The gravity of the offences of which she is accused does not allow an alternative to custody".

Ahed has been hailed as a hero by Palestinians for standing up to Israel's occupation of the West Bank.

The two soldiers Ahed Tamimi attacked wore helmets and combat gear and tried to deflect her blows, but remained largely passive during the incident, which occurred in the midst of a violent demonstration against Israeli policies in Yehudah and Shomron.

The judge's decision on Wednesday raises the possibility that she could spend months in custody before the conclusion of her case.

Since her arrest, NGOs claiming to promote human rights have been calling for her release, primarily on the basis of her age as well as the political motivations surrounding the incidents. Nariman Tamimi also was charged with incitement to terrorism on Facebook for posting the video of the incident.

2018), a military judge approved the prosecution's request to remand 'Ahed and Nariman Tamimi in custody.

Israeli forces first detained al-Tamimi on December 19 during an overnight raid carried out in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh for allegedly attacking Israeli soldiers.

A video of the encounter showed Tamimi slapping an officer and punching a soldier next to him in the face.

The heavily armed soldiers do not respond in the face of what appears to be an attempt to provoke rather than seriously harm them.

But in Israel, the soldiers' decision not to react to the seeming provocation by Ahed stirred a debate about deterrence and drawn allegations that the army was humiliated.

Seventeen Palestinians have been killed since Trump's declaration on 6 December, majority in clashes with Israeli forces. Shortly before, her 15-year-old cousin was severely wounded after Israeli forces shot him point-blank in the face with a rubber bullet.

"The deprivation of liberty of children shall only be used as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time, and the best interests of the child are to be a primary concern", it said. On Monday, Amnesty International issued a statement demanding that Israel release the 16-year-old. Nariman was also indicted on an assault charge and "incitement" for uploading the video on social media.

"We urge Israel to ensure that the treatment of Ahed Tamimi is in accordance with global law and the special protection she is granted as a child".

"Remand in custody - even of minors - is part of the routine of oppression that Israel employs against Palestinians, with the full backing of the military courts, a system in which both judges and prosecutors are always military personnel, the defendants always Palestinian, and the conviction rate nearly 100 percent", it said.
