Cop Dead After Shooting Injures Multiple Officers in Denver

Five deputies were shot, one fatally, when they responded to a "verbal disturbance" at 5:14 AM New Year's Eve Sunday.

"We have multiple officers down", Douglas County, Colorado, Sheriff's Deputy Jason Blanchard told The New York Times earlier Sunday.

Spurlock identified Deputy Zackari Parrish, 29, as the officer killed in the attack.

The shooting happened at a landscaped apartment complex 16 miles south of Denver.

"It was very hard to go see Zack for the last time today", Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock told reporters on Sunday.

Two civilians were also shot by the suspect, authorities said.

After Riehl published several social media posts critical of University of Wyoming professors, the campus police chief says officers called police in Lone Tree, Colorado, in November to warn them about Riehl, suggesting his rants were indicative of mental illness.

One person who knows all too well what the law enforcement community of Douglas County is going through is former Denver police officer John Adsit.

The suspect was shot dead, the sheriff's office confirmed. He joined the sheriff's department about seven months ago, after two years with the Castle Rock Police Department.

Parrish was a father with two children, and a "good kid, a smiley kid" who was "eager to work and eager to serve", Spurlock said. Residents in the vicinity were asked to shelter in place, and avoid windows and exterior walls. "Please avoid this area", the sheriff's office tweeted.

"They all went down within nearly seconds of each other so it was more of an ambush type of attack on our officers", Spurlock said.

The owner went on to say Riehl provided his own firearms during training sessions, and they're prepared to cooperate with any investigation that may result. Castle Rock Police Department Officer Tom O'Donnell, 41, was also shot.

Trump expressed sorrow about the attack, saying on Twitter, "My deepest condolences to the victims of the awful shooting in Douglas County. and their families". Spurlock said the injured deputies are all in stable condition.

The officers arrived at the apartment just after 5 a.m.

Police responded to a "domestic disturbance" call early on New Year's Eve after a neighbor called to say Riehl was acting freakish and might be having a mental breakdown.

President Donald Trump sent his condolences to the victims of the shooting in Colorado on Sunday morning.

A GoFundMe page was established for Deputy Parrish's family.
