Centre to review rules on anthem

The move has come in the light of incidents when people have been forced into cinema halls while the national anthem is being played in theatres.

The court had directed all movie halls and theatres to play the national anthem before the start of a play, movie or any other programme and said that audiences must stand up and pay respect in a bid to instil a sense of patriotism and nationalism. "The National Anthem is sung at various places like schools, public functions, events etc".

The Centre has informed Supreme Court that playing of the national anthem in cinema halls before movies should not be made mandatory for now. A final call can be taken on the issue once a ministerial panel comes up with its guidelines on this, the government has said. He also said the court may modify its earlier order and replace the "shall" in it with "may". "This court may consider the restoration of status quo ante until then, that is restoration of the position as it stood before the order passed by this court on November 30, 2016 with regard to direction to the extent that it mandates the playing of the national anthem in all cinemas before the feature film starts", the affidavit said.

The matter is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday. He said that the committee would take at least 6 months to study all aspects relating to the singing of the National Anthem and also the manner in which respect ought to be given.

The playing of national anthem before the screening of movies should not be made compulsory for now, the government told the Supreme Court on Monday.

The Bench was hearing a petition filed by the Kodungalloor Film Society, Kerala, to recall the order. "The court had just read the law", she said, adding that people living in the country must abide by the law of the land.

The court's order came on a public interest litigation (PIL) by Shayam Narayan Chouksey seeking framing of guidelines on the playing of the national anthem.
