Air strikes kill 24 civilians in Syria's Idlib

According to the Syrian army, its air defense systems intercepted several missiles and struck one Israeli aircraft.

Israel then fired ground-to-ground rockets from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, but the Syrian defences brought the missiles down, the Syrian army said.

Israeli officials have yet to comment on the attack.

The monitor, which gathers its information from a network of sources inside Syria, added that it was not clear whether the attack was specifically targeting the group's base.

"The Syrian army's general headquarters is warning Israel once again against the serious ramifications of such aggressive acts and sees Israel as fully responsible for its moves", the statement said.

The latest casualties came on Monday when air strikes killed a child and two other civilians in Madira, a village in Eastern Ghouta, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The state-affiliated al-Ikhbariya TV station says the Syrian army broke through rebel lines Sunday to reach soldiers trapped at the Murakabat vehicle base near Harasta, in the eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus.

As rebels lost battles elsewhere in the country, government-imposed ceasefire agreements would send those fighters as well as civilians from those areas to Idlib, swelling the population of the fledgling statelet to about two million.

More than 90 civilians were killed and over 200 others injured in attacks in de-escalation zones in Idlib in the past three weeks.

The letter also reads that the Israeli attacks are mostly aimed at increasing the "shallow morale" of the terrorist organizations operating in the area targeted by the alleged airstrike.

Ten of the assault drones were directed toward the Hmeimim airbase in northwestern Syria, the NYT said.
