PM Modi slams parties seeking votes in Ambedkar's name

Hitting out at the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said parties seeking votes in B.R. Ambedkar's name tried to erase his contribution in nation building and did little to build the Ambedkar International Centre conceived 23 years ago.

The Prime Minister said that thought-leaders and visionaries have shaped the direction of our country, at different points in time.

That is why, he added, that important places related to Dr. Ambedkar's life have been developed as centres of pilgrimage.

"Baba Saheb's contribution to nation building is very important, there had been attempts to undermine his role, but such attempts were unsuccessful", he said.

He said poor people have been empowered by government initiatives such as the RuPay debit card and free gas connections to poor families. These sites in Delhi, Mumbai, Nagpur, Mhow and London were like a homage from the present generation, he said. He said that this "Panchteerth" is the today's generation's way of paying homage to Dr. Ambedkar.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that the Centre would play a key role in the dissemination of Dr Ambedkar's teachings and vision.

"We had said that in one year we will build toilets for girls in all government schools, we have already constructed over 4 lakh such facilities".

The Prime Minister recalled Dr. Ambedkar's words, that we should make our political democracy, a social democracy as well. He said, efforts are being made to ensure that every poor has his house by 2022 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. "It will not be wrong if I say that more people are still influenced by Ambedkar's ideas than the family for which such efforts were made", Modi said. The home state of the Prime Minister has been witness to massive protests by Dalits against the BJP since previous year when two Dalit men were mercilessly flogged in Gujarat's Una by cow vigilantes on the suspicion that they had slaughtered cows.

The Centre has come up at 15 Janpath in the national capital.
