Odie gets the last laugh: Dogs revealed to be smarter than cats!

For the past decade, the now Vanderbilt professor has been studying cognitive function in humans and animals. There appeared to be discrepancies when it came to neurons and cortex size, the study also found.

What the researchers did is take brain matter and essentially turn it into soup. From there, she said, you end up with a number of suspended nuclei from neuron cells that allow the researchers to estimate the number of neurons present.

"Raccoons are not your typical carnivoran", said Ms. Herculano-Houzel. The more neurons the brain contains, the faster that processor is and the brain has the capacity for more complex behaviors, pattern recognition and the ability to make decisions based on past experiences or future perceptions.

Herculano-Houzel said that studying the brains of different species is important.

Raccoons, despite having cat-sized brains, have neuron numbers more similar to dogs, making them similar to primates in neuronal density, according to the study. Two brains were used to study dogs because the canines vary so greatly in size.

This is what they found when they looked at cats' and dogs' cerebral cortex, the information-processing part of the brain: A cat's cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. Among our closest cousins, orangutans and gorillas have about eight to nine billion neurons, while chimpanzees have about six to seven billion neurons. And so, the more neurons an animal has, the better its information processing capability, these scientists say. That may help them wield their hefty trunks. "At the least, we now have some biology that people can factor into their discussions about who's smarter, cats or dogs".

Of course, such an arbitrary measurement of the brain is not an objective metric of such a complex trait as intelligence. For example, the Golden Retriever had more cortical neurons than a brown bear whose brain is three times larger than that of a dog, the number of neurons in the bear approximately equal to the number counted in cats.

Herculano-Houzel argues that counting neurons is just one, albeit in her opinion the most effective to date, way to measure intelligence. Score one for Team Cat!
