Nissan 'robo-taxi' taking to Japanese roads in March

The companies, which began a technical field test using an autonomous vehicle this year, will recruit participants for the March field test until January.

Nissan also said it will test an autonomous ride-hailing service on public roads in Japan in March, aiming to officially start the "robot taxi" rides in the early 2020s, reported Bloomberg.

GM president Dan Ammann said last week that whereas the company now receives around $30,000 over the lifetime of a new vehicle that it sells, that figure could grow to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a self-driving auto used as part of a revenue-generating ride-hailing service.

The automaker has been working with local internet and software company DeNA since January this year to develop its driverless technology, which is fitted to modified models of Nissan's Leaf electric vehicle. This will be an open test and will start next year, reports Sina. The company will put two Leaf electric cars, equipped with sensors and cameras and autonomous driving software developed by DeNA Co. DeNA canceled its partnership with Japanese startup ZMP to join Nissan in the project.

Nissan Motor Company is expected to roll out its self-driving cars by 2o22. And the APP cannot only enable users to set a destination, but also provide passengers information about nearby restaurants, hotels and other service information, allowing users to set driving directions.

Called Easy Ride, the vehicles will work alongside a mobile app that enables users to hail one of the cars as and when they need one. Nissan plan to have this service up and running in Yokohama by at least 2020, hoping for a completion of everything to pick-up and drop-off via mobile payment to having the option of taking the scenic route to your destination. It's noteworthy here, though, that the two companies have actually been performing field testing of their "Easy Ride" system since earlier this year.
