Newborn dies 7 days after mistakenly declared dead by Delhi hospital

The family had a day earlier refused to take his body till action was taken against the erring doctors.

According to a Delhi government official, the government's preliminary inquiry report had found that "no [electrocardiography] tracings were done to trace whether the child was alive". The baby boy died at a nursing home in Pitampura after battling for life for almost a week.

Recall that two doctors at a privately run hospital were sacked after they both initially declared the infant dead, hours after his twin was stillborn on November 30. Max Hospital also sent its condolences to the parents after hearing that the baby who survived also died.

It sparked an outrage and the stunned family rushed the newborn to another hospital, where the doctors told the family that the baby is still alive.

The baby was admitted to a private nursing home in Pitampura where he was put on a ventilator and the doctors said that the due to the premature birth, his condition was serious and that his chances of survival slim.

Meanwhile, authorities at the Max hospital released a statement on Wednesday, lending their support to the family, but did not comment on the allegations of negligence. I lived through the death of my daughter, and death of my son, not once but twice. The baby's uncle said that they will continue to protest outside Max Hospital.

"We wish to clarify that this action should not presuppose finding of any lapse by the expert group and should not be construed in any way to be anything other than an expression of our continued commitment to providing quality healthcare", the statement from Max Healthcare said.

The state health minister, Satyender Jain, has said the hospital's licence could be cancelled if a probe found it guilty of medical negligence. This was against the prescribed norms for dealing with newborns.

The boy is being treated at a nursing home in New Delhi now that parents have lost all trust in Max Super Speciality Hospital, where the twins were born.
