Mourinho promises 'more chances' for Shaw after strong display

The BT Sport panel consisting of Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard discussed what they feel is going on in the life of Shaw both on and off the pitch to say he can not seem to reach a consistent high level of performance, despite the fact he is so clearly blessed with bundles of talent.

Luke Shaw played in his first Champions League game for Manchester United on Tuesday night since September 2015 when he suffered that terrible leg-break in an away fixture against PSV Eindhoven.

"It is normal, the first match of the season for him, but he was deserving of that opportunity for quite a long time".

"He managed to stay on for 90 minutes". At half-time we were playing well and I was not unhappy.

"It's hard to say as we don't see what goes on behind the scenes. He's the best left-back at the club, there's no doubt about it", Scholes told BT Sport.

"With his body shape, he looks like a player who needs to be playing every week".

"We had Rooney, who was a player if he missed a couple of games you knew, he wasn't looking after himself".

"I can't think of a left-back like that who can change the pace of the game as quick as he does".

He earned a reputation as one of England's most exciting players after Shaw impressed during his latter teenage years at Southampton before a £27m move to Manchester United in 2015.

When he's at his best, the former Southampton man can offer something different on that flank.

The England global was handed a first start when the former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager started him on the left wing-back position. Alternatives for Mourinho include Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian.

Rose has struggled to win over Mauricio Pochettino since he questioned the club's transfer strategy in the summer and was left out of the matchday squad for last month's north London derby despite claiming he had recovered from injury and was ready to play. United supporters will be hoping Tuesday's display can be a catalyst for that process beginning in earnest.
