Melbourne United to host ANBL game during Australian Open in January

Speaking to reporters in US, Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said it is "very likely" for Serena to come back in January to chase down the record of winning 24 grand slam titles now held by Margaret Court.

This comes after she wedded her boyfriend, the Reddit Co-founder Alexis Ohanian in a pompous wedding in New Orleans in November.

Williams last played at the 2017 Australian Open and won while she was nine weeks pregnant.

She gave birth to a girl in September and has taken to the practice courts in preparation for a return in 2018.

Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, which is the most in the Open era of women's tennis.

She is targeting the 2019 Melbourne Park competition, which Tiley believes to be her focus in surpassing the record of 24 single titles.

"She wants to break the record owned by Margaret Court and it would be a significant accomplishment for her to be able to do that".

Tiley, however, was much more enthusiastic when asked about the prospect at a Tennis Australia event to announce that NBL clubs Melbourne United and Cairns Taipans would play a game on Hisense Arena during the Australian Open. "Roger Federer travels with his four kids and we are a family-friendly event", referring to Williams and her baby.

The victor of the 2018 tournament will walk away with Aus$4.0 million (US$3.0 million), up from Aus$3.7 million past year.

The total tournament purse has risen 10 percent to £31.1m.
