Mariners and Angels add $1M apiece from Twins to pursue Shohei Ohtani

Minnesota in separate trades on Thursday acquired catcher David Banuelos from Seattle and outfielder Jacob Pearson from the Angels, both 2017 draft picks.

The move gives the Mariners $2.55 million available to give the highly coveted Ohtani, while the Angels now have $2.315 million.

Seattle and the Los Angeles Angels, eager to sign the Japanese star, both obtained $1 million in worldwide bonus pool cap space from the Twins on Wednesday and parted with players taken in the June draft. In any event, the Mariners and Angels have been perhaps the most active teams during the Ohtani recruitment, and now they'll of course be able to make an even more lucrative pitch to the 23-year-old prized free agent.

Ohtani was put up for bid on December 1 by the Pacific League's Nippon Ham Fighters for the maximum $20 million posting fee and met with the Mariners, Angels, Rangers, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs in-person this week. The Twins had $3.2 million in their global pool, but Ohtani narrowed the list of teams he was considering to seven finalists, and the Twins were not on the list.

The 21-year-old hit.236 with four home runs and 26 RBIs for Class A Short Season Everett and was selected to play in the Northwest League All-Star Game. Ohtani has met with both the Angels and Mariners after narrowing his list of potential landing spots down to seven this past weekend.

Pearson, also a 2017 draftee - in the third round out of a Louisiana high school - spent 40 games in the rookie-level Arizona League.

Pearson, 19, was the Angels' No. 5 prospect according to MLB.com, although he would have likely fallen one slot when the deal for Kevin Maitan is finalized. The Cubs, Dodgers, Giants and Padres are capped at $300,000. Due to his age, Ohtani can only sign a minor league contract and is subject to the global bonus pool.
