Franks was seen being comforted in the chamber by several other Republicans shortly before he left the House floor.

Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., announced on the Senate floor Thursday that he will leave office at the end of the year. He's a staunch social conservative who sponsored House-passed legislation to make it a crime for any person to perform an abortion if the age of the fetus is 20 weeks or more. He serves on the House Judiciary and Armed Services committees. He made his fortune in the oil business and also founded a socially conservative think tank.

Frank's 8th District in Arizona backed President Donald Trump by 21 points in 2016. "The special general election is required to be held no less than 50 and no more than 60 days after the primary".
