2 killed, 2 injured in knife attack in Tokyo

Three people have died in a stabbing attack at a prominent shrine in Tokyo, including the head priest and the attacker, who apparently took his own life.

A Shinto priestess was killed on the grounds of a famous Tokyo shrine by a man wielding a katana, who then killed another woman before committing suicide, police said on Friday, in what local media described as an apparent family feud.

Police believe Nagako Tomioka was killed by her brother, while the accomplice attacked Tomioka's driver.

Shigenaga and the other woman, who was his girlfriend and believed to be in her 30s, apparently ambushed Nagako after she got out of a auto on the grounds of the shrine in Tokyo's eastern ward of Koto.

The Times says authorities suspect a dispute between the brother and sister over the Shinto shrine's chief priest position.

Nagako Tomioka, 58, chief priestess of Tomioka Hachimangū in Tokyo, was attacked by Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, as she got out of a auto on Thursday evening. The injuries to his shoulder and chest were not life-threatening.

A blood-stained samurai sword and survival knife were retrieved from the scene.

Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, is suspected of having attacked his 58-year-old sister Nagako Tomioka, the chief priest of the Tomioka Hachimangu shrine, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

The newspaper reports: "Shigenaga Tomioka was arrested some 10 years ago for blackmailing his sister". After he left the post of chief priest in 2001, he sent a threatening postcard to his sister in January 2006 in which he wrote, among other things, that he would send her to hell. The shrine, located roughly 100 meters east of Monzen-Nakacho Station, is also the birthplace of the Edo-period fundraising sumo.
