Uber Sex Assault Class Action Filed by 2 Women

As an example of the failings of Uber's background checks, the complaint cites the more than 8,000 drivers in MA who were pulled off the road after the state government made a decision to introduce more stringent screenings and reviewed the records of the 71,000 people who drove on Uber or Lyft.

"Uber must make drastic changes to prevent another female rider from harm", said Jeanne Christensen, a partner at Wigdor. The accusers are seeking compensation for the alleged offenses and have requested the judge grant an injunction against Uber that requires the company to implement stricter background checks on its drivers.

Internal customer support documents obtained from Uber in 2016 showed that more than 6,000 driver or rider complaints include the term "sexual assault", although Uber claims the actual number of assaults is far lower.

A class-action lawsuit in California alleges Uber - through perceived driver screening failures - created an environment conducive to sexual assault, harassment and violence. Nothing meaningful has been done to make rides safer for passengers - especially women.

Uber has been hit with yet another lawsuit, after two women filed a class action legal complaint accusing the company of not doing enough to protect riders from rape, which they claim to be direct victims of.

Uber has argued that the screening standards applied in Maryland - where thousands of drivers have been rejected upon review since December 2015 - are outdated, overly broad and fail to adhere to a legal standard established by the state Public Service Commission a year ago.

It's been a tumultuous year for the ridesharing company.

However, the case hinges on issues the ride-hail company, which is no stranger to legal battles, has long fought across the globe: Background checks and being treated like other for-hire companies.

The lawsuit describes all the access Uber provides for drivers to commit sexual assault. That's also the case for its fight to be regulated as a technology company.

The complaint goes on to describe the litany of problems with Uber's background check procedures, noting that in April, Massachusetts authorities found 8,206 Uber and Lyft drivers out of more than 70,789 failed its screening process, with 1,599 having a history of violent crime and 51 being registered sex offenders. It is time for Uber to 'Do the right thing. That woman is now suing the company for invasion of privacy. The company was banned from New Delhi in 2014 after a driver allegedly raped one of his passengers.
