Tesla Introduces Two New Models: Is the Company Headed for a Crash?

"We have a long history of testing new technology - including alternative-fuel trucks - and we are excited to be among the first to pilot this new heavy-duty electric vehicle", Wal-Mart spokesman Ryan Curell said.

The new Roadster was revealed to much surprise at the launch of the new Tesla Semi truck, with some astonishing performance claims - 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds, a 620-mile all-electric range and a top speed of 250mph.

The firm says the heavy Semi and hybrid refrigerated trailer that Tesla and its boss, Elon Musk, demonstrated "use technology that will be expanded to Loblaw's fleet in the coming years".

There is some real market demand for it, Musk said, with truckers and fleet operators exploring their options for achieving fuel cost savings and cutting other operating expenses. Even though the Tesla pick-up will be based on the Semi, it will not be classified as a heavy vehicle which means that one does not need to have a commercial licence to drive one of these.

Electric trucks benefit from having fewer moving parts and no transmission of diesel after-treatment systems. Compared to diesel-powered trucks, the expenditure for the distance of 1 kilometer is less than 20%.

"Overall, the Semi is more responsive, covers more miles than a diesel truck in the same amount of time, and more safely integrates with passenger auto traffic", it said on the company's website.

Megachargers, a new high-speed DC charging solution, will add about 640 kilometres in 30 minutes and can be installed at origin or destination points and along heavily trafficked routes, enabling recharging during loading, unloading, and driver breaks.

Bloomberg estimates that electric trucks will cost operators about 12 cents a mile on maintenance.

In the U.S., fleet owner J.B. Hunt Transport Services says it has placed a reservation for "multiple" Semis, with plans to place them with Intermodal and Dedicated Contract Services divisions to support operations on the West Coast, where emissions controls are the stiffest in the country. However, mass production of solid state batteries Fisker, according to media reports, will not begin until 2023.

New customers are responding to the appeal.

The biggest order with a definite number attached belongs to leading Canadian supermarket chain Loblaw Companies with 25. Earlier this year, investors' confidence in Tesla's potential pushed the company's market capitalization to surge ahead of GM and Ford. He goes on to acknowledge that electric trucks are happening, but he just questions some of the aspects of Tesla's approach. The Tesla Semi is scheduled to enter production in 2019. Daimler, Cummins, and Bosch are taking electric commercial trucks very seriously in their product planning and development. And a host of major corporations have now placed pre-orders for the truck. Startups such as Chanje, Nikola, and Wrightspeed are finding clientele, just like Tesla is doing.
