Skier Poisson hits tree in training crash death

French skier David Poisson has died after a fall in training in Canada.

Poisson, a bronze medallist at the 2013 World Championships, passed away after a crash in the resort of Nakiska.

The French Ski Federation says an early investigation into the death of David Poisson, at Nakiska Monday, suggests the safety netting failed and he hit a tree.

"According to information now available to the French ski federation, David Poisson fell heavily after losing a ski during a shared training session with other countries which took place yesterday (Monday) in Nakiska, Canada", the federation said.

They are still waiting to hear from the French team to see if they want any sort of tribute to Poisson to be held at the World Cup event. Poisson won the downhill bronze medal at the 2013 world championships.

Poisson, a 35-year-old racer with a broad smile nicknamed "Caillou" ("small stone"), was a popular figure on the World Cup circuit.

Nakiska was the site which staged Alpine skiing races during the 1988 Olympics.

They've been building the course since October and there will be multiple layers of netting on the course. He added: "It's just frightful that this has happened and really our hearts are torn apart by it and our thoughts and prayers are with his family in France".
