'No Indication' Saudi Coalition Reopening Yemen Ports

'No Indication' Saudi Coalition Reopening Yemen Ports

The coalition closed all air, land and sea ports last week in response to a rebel ballistic missile attack on Riyadh.

On Tuesday, Yemen's airline said a commercial plane landed at Aden worldwide airport after acquiring permits from the Saudi-led coalition.

Saudi Arabia's mission to the United Nations says the Saudi-led coalition fighting Shiite rebels in Yemen will begin reopening airports and seaports in the Arab world's poorest country.

The Saudi-led military coalition fighting Yemen's Shiite rebels bombed the airport in the rebel-held capital, Sanaa, on Tuesday, Yemeni officials said, though there were conflicting reports as to the extent of the damage.

"The humanitarian impact of what is happening right now is unimaginable", he said.

McGoldrick was speaking to reporters in Geneva by phone from Amman, because he said flights into Sanaa were blocked.

However, McGoldrick said earlier in the day that there was "no indication" the coalition was actually lifting the blockade in line with its announcement.

The Saudi U.N. ambassador denied that there has been an embargo, saying "a temporary procedure" was taken for a few days to ensure the safety and security of Yemenis and Saudis, and that supplies were available.

"We would ask that the coalition opens all the seaports as a matter of urgency and allows humanitarian and other supplies to move, as well as the movement of aid workers", he said.

"This import blockage will reverse those gains and leave millions of people in a very precarious situation as we move ahead".

Amid "the state of deadlock" in Lebanon following the resignation of its prime minister, the prelates said they were concerned that he had not yet returned to Lebanon, stressing that this was "necessary for the sake of dignity, sovereignty and stability".

Yemen had commercial wheat stocks for three months for the entire population of 28 million and about 120 days of rice. "There are many sources of supply to Yemen, even during the past week or so".
