Nigeria has 25 Olympic medals, all from summer games, and has yet to compete in a winter game.

In an interview with CBC, Adigun revealed that the trio built their sled - named the Mayflower - at home, out of wood they picked up at the local hardware store.

Since the programme began in 2000, Team Visa has supported over 400 Olympic and Paralympic athletes and hopefuls by providing them with the tools, resources and support they need to reach their highest potential, regardless of origin or background.

They crowd-funded the $150,000 (130,000 euros, £114,000) required to train and compete and through a mixture of savvy marketing and publicity have developed a strong online profile that has helped attract sponsorship from Visa and sportswear manufacturer Under Armour.

"Starting the Nigerian Women's Bobsled team was not an easy decision, but I know it will be one of the most impactful things I will ever initiate".

"I commend the personal dedication and commitment of these women", Ogba said.

Nigeria's newly-formed women's bobsled team has just qualified for the bobsled event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

"They are all very successful people in their own right - in sports and out of it, and somehow they are still motivated and still push for more success". He'd be the first snowboarder to represent any African country in the Olympics if he qualifies.

Given that no African country has ever competed in the Bobsled, they can be pretty sure that they'll be the best ever at that.

Isaac Menyoli, the first person to represent Cameroon at the Winter Olympics, had to create a national skiing federation in order to compete in the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.

Athletes from Eritrea, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Togo an Zimbabwe have also participated in the Winter Olympics.

The team's story revives memories of the Jamaican men's bobsled's team's participation in the 1988 Calgary Games in Canada that inspired the 1993 film Cool Runnings.

"Obviously, the bigger goal is to just be as competitive as we can and obviously shoot for the podium".
