Clarkson, Pink honor victims of hurricanes, violence at AMAs

Pink and Kelly Clarkson got the 2017 American Music Awards off to an emotional start on Sunday (19Nov17) with a cover of R.E.M's Everybody Hurts.

"This year, more than perhaps any other in recent history, we needed the power of music to help us heal, from hurricanes, wildfires, hate, hatred-fueled violence".

Clarkson and P!nk's performance - trading off verses of the unifying song - was a moving tribute to first responders: police officers, firefighters, paramedics, disaster relief teams, and all those who show up at the first sign of trouble.

The once-in-a-lifetime duet came just minutes into the broadcast, after Jamie Foxx brought his daughter onstage to open the awards ceremony by honoring first responders who were among those who were on the front lines in 2017 as America faced one tragedy and catastrophe after another. In these moments of crisis, heroes emerged. Pink opened the song, striding regally across the stage in a leather moto jacket and a black gown covered with red flowers.

The two legendary singers had been fans of each other's work long before this collaboration.

Pink and Kelly Clarkson perform at the 2017 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on November 19, 2017.

Pink replied, "You're joking!"

Later on, both vocalists will sing solo.

Clarkson teased what she promised would be a "powerful" performance to ET before the show. "Like, I have a whole performance that I'm excited about, but I'm more excited about me and Pink, so, yeah".
