Avengers 4 Will Be a Finale for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Here's what we can safely assume is going to happen: the original six - Iron Man, Black Widow, Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Thor - won't be returning for any movies after Avengers 4.

Almost a decade, $13 billion, and 17 movies later, it feels like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been going on for a lifetime.

Marvel Studios president and executive producer, Kevin Feige, told Vanity Fair that Avengers 4 will be the first time a superhero storyline has a true finale. "It's a bittersweet feeling, but a positive one".

Avengers: Infinity War will be in theaters on May 4, 2018.

As Collider noted, this is connected, in part, to contracts expiring for major stars like Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Chris Evans. Marvel has already released or plotted out 22 MCU films, from Iron Man through to the end of the studio's "Phase Three" arc, which wraps with a fourth and supposedly final Avengers film in 2019, closing out the Infinity Warstory But according to Feige, "we've got another 20 movies on the docket that are completely different from anything that's come before - intentionally".

It's safe to assume many Avengers will die at the hands of Thanos (Josh Brolin), who has appeared periodically since the first Avengers movie in 2012. Most of the article focuses on Kevin Feige and the history of how all this came to be, but it contains slight nods to the future as well. He added, "There will be two distinct periods". "Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after".

"I never liked the idea that people weren't attempting things because of the potential for them to look silly", Feige explains. If not, it's probably because there are 7 gazillion Marvel characters and even a spread this big can't get to all of them.

Feige does have a plan for the future of Marvel Studios, as it's said they're now working on many different movies to take the superhero universe in many different directions, including possible spinoffs for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.
