Almost 51 Million Americans to Travel This Thanksgiving

Airfare for the top 40 domestic destinations round trip are averaged at $157, which is a whopping 23 per cent lower than the average of last year's, and the lowest in five years.

USA motorists will take 45.5 million trips this holiday, a 1.5 percent increase over past year and also the most since 2005, even though gas prices are at their highest since 2014, AAA said.

More than 45 million will travel by vehicle between next Wednesday and the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the auto club said Thursday.

The number of travelers hitting the road this Thanksgiving holiday is expected to swell to levels not seen in more than a decade, triggering what could be "record" traffic delays in some of the country's biggest cities, according to the American Automobile Association. You might be entitled to free checked bags, a discount on in-flight food and drinks, lounge passes or other goodies.

It is the sixth consecutive year air travel has grown during the holiday, and now accounts now for 7.8 percent of all travel, its highest share since 2010, AAA said.

AAA does predict that while they expect to see lower prices at the pump in the coming days, they are expecting travelers to see the highest gas prices since 2014. That's despite a higher national average for gas prices over a year ago; this November's national average is $2.54, about 37 cents more than last November.

"If you are able to travel before Thanksgiving Day because it's proven to be the busiest day of the weekend to travel, so if you can get away early that would definitely be an option you want to consider", said Marcia Dionne, AAA Travel Agent.
