U.S. customers can now order food through Facebook

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) on Friday announced that its users can now order food for takeout or delivery from local restaurants without having to even leave the app.

Instead, the company is partnering with existing services Delivery.com, DoorDash, ChowNow, Zuppler, EatStreet, Slice, and Olo - not Seamless - and will now link out to those food ordering businesses for restaurants that support them. This isn't ideal for Facebook, as the company wants you constant attention.

If you don't have an account, you can sign up directly from the Facebook app. It figures that slapping a "start order" will make it easier and quicker for people to get food straight from local restaurants and into their stomachs.

Earlier this year, TechCrunch reported this "Order Food" feature was in testing as a new option from within the Explore menu in the app. Facebook, at the time, confirmed it was an expansion of its previous "Order Food" functionality via the Facebook Pages.

Hungry customers will be shown a list of participating restaurants in their area, including national chains like Five Guys and Panera, and will be able to select whether they are ordering for pick-up or delivery. Shares of food order and delivery service GrubHub Inc dropped almost 3%.

If Facebook's goal is to allow users to do pretty much everything from within their service, which keeps users engaged, then they're doing a solid job of it with this new development.

It'll be available at launch in the United States only, and it's rolling out from today to Facebook's apps on iOS, Android and the desktop (Web).

A year back, the company has said its USA users would be able to order food through a restaurants' Facebook page.

First, scroll down to the "order food" tab in the Facebook app or website.
