Talwars acquitted by Allahabad High Court

Talwars acquitted by Allahabad High Court

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday ruled that dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar from Delhi were not guilty of the murder of their daughter Aarushi, 14, and domestic help Hemraj in 2008.

"Grateful to the court for the verdict, we always knew they were innocent,"said Aarushi's grandfather, following the HC verdict".

Arushi was fund murdered with her throat slit with surgical precision in her bedroom in the Talwar's Jal Vayu Vihar apartment, located in Noida, on May 16, 2008. There were wounds all over his body and the door to the terrace was found locked from inside.

Noida Police alleged that Rajesh had committed the twin murders after finding Aarushi and Hemraj in an "objectionable" position.

After a day, the CBI court sentenced the Talwars to life.

The nine-year trial in the murder of their daughter Aarushi had left the Talwar couple emotionally drained, Nupur Talwar's father said today, thanking the judiciary for acquitting them. A series of lapses marked the investigation, both when it was handled originally by the Noida police and then by the CBI.

Though Rajesh Talwar's initial bail plea was refused by a Ghaziabad magistrate, he was granted bail on July 12.

After talking to Aarushi's friends, the police began to suspect that her parents were involved in her murder.

Rajesh was arrested briefly too. The High Court had also chose to hear the appeals afresh due to contradictions in some submissions made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and had resumed the hearing in August.

The argument in the court pointed out on few evidences which could have led to the murder of the two, such as the activities that happened on the Internet, the very night of the murder, were quite suspicious, the missing key of Aarushi's room, Hemraj's pillowcase colour and the forensic test reports.

In 2009, the CBI had handed over the murder case to a new team and suggested a closure of it.

The three were later freed after no evidence was found against them.

Rajesh and Nupur, who are serving life sentence at Ghaziabad's Dasna jail, had moved the High Court against their conviction by the CBI court.

The Talwars, who were a well-to-do dentists with a happy life with good friends and family have lost everything now and for the past nine years focus has remained on the Talwars due to their cruelty.

"One of the big loopholes in the investigation was that Hemraj's blood was never found in the room", said AP Singh.
