Storm Brian: Strong winds set to hit British Isles

While not as severe as recent extra-tropical storm Ophelia, orange warnings may be put in place along the south coast, with strong low pressure tracking into Munster from the west-southwest and continuing through the country to reach the central Irish Sea by Saturday morning.

Speaking with the Irish Independent, Met Eireann's John Eagleton said that Storm Brian will not possess almost as much destructive capability as Ophelia but that it will "hit the United Kingdom".

It is understood the orange wind warning has been placed on counties Galway, Mayo, Wexford, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford with winds expected to reach 130kph.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for strong winds and potential flooding in parts of southern and western England and Wales on Saturday.

An expected fall of 24 millibars in 24 hours will give the system enough intensity to warrant the term "explosive cyclogenesis" or "weather bomb".

GWENT and other areas of Wales has been given warning of high winds and potential for flooding at the weekend as Storm Brian and a so-called "weather bomb" comes from the Atlantic.

"We are now looking at the depression as it deepens and moves".

Here are the areas that are expected to bear the brunt of the poor weather.

Oh, and one more thing while we have you!

But, according to the good folk at Met √Čireann, it's not meant to be.

"At the moment, we don't expect the same level of impacts for the United Kingdom", he said.

Ophelia, meanwhile, was a North Atlantic hurricane named in Miami and made a rare turn towards Britain and Ireland - explaining the alphabetical difference between it and Brian.

A total of 35 giant Lime trees - planted to mark the opening of Henry Ford's vehicle plant in Cork more than 100 years ago - were knocked over like dominoes on the Centre Park Road by the winds which reached 130km/h. It is estimated that 60mm of rainfall will fall in the south over the next 24 hours alone.
