Smoke from California wildfires reaches Pocatello

October 11-As firefighters begin their third day battling multiple wildfires in California's Wine Country with a focus on saving lives and preserving property, heavy winds are expected to return Wednesday afternoon and create a "very high fire danger".

Latest maps from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) show more than two dozen wildfires burning uncontrolled across the state.

The 17 large wildfires that have burned more than 115,000 acres in California since Sunday have now been blamed for at least 17 deaths. The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office announced the evacuation of Sonoma Mountain, Bennett Ridge and Enterprise roads in the Bennett Valley area of Santa Rosa at 3:52 p.m.

After a day of cooler weather and calmer winds, officials say low moisture and unsafe gusty winds will return to the region Wednesday afternoon, complicating firefighters' efforts.

The fire had burned 28,000 acres as of Wednesday morning, according to Cal Fire.

First Baptist Church in Clearlake, Calif. - where fire has destroyed more than 100 homes and blackened the landscape - has helped feed and find lodging for three families in the congregation that were displaced.

Giordano said 20 of his staff members lost their homes in the Tubbs Fire that started in Calistoga Sunday night and was quickly swept by the fierce, window-rattling wind into Santa Rosa.

In the town of Napa on the first night of a blaze dubbed the Atlas fire, almost 50 people who were in danger of being overrun by flames were rescued by the crews of two California Highway Patrol helicopters.

The video below was only uploaded today by the Berkeley Fire Department as they were battling a blaze somewhere in Santa Rosa.

Smoke from various wildfires is seen in Sonoma Valley along Highway 12 during the Tubbs Fire in Sonoma. "We had all these people who were already confused and now they were in an unfamiliar place with all this frenzy going on around them".

No details have been released on the two newly confirmed dead. Some 4,000 people are battling the fires, including crews from Nevada and the U.S. Forest Service.

Matt Nauman, a spokesman for the region's main utility, Pacific Gas & Electric, acknowledged that fallen power lines were widespread during the "historic wind event", which he said packed some hurricane-strength gusts in excess of 75 miles per hour (120 km/h). President Trump has issued a major disaster declaration; the Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing federal disaster assistance to California to bolster state, tribal and local recovery efforts. They're safe - but as seen in photos McCallister shared on Facebook, fire destroyed their house.

McCallister said that some of those neighbors are the reason she and her husband were able to grab necessities and get out.
