Sen. Collins to announce this morning whether she will run for governor

Collins announced plans Friday that she will remain in the Senate, ending speculation that she would run for ME governor next year.

Republican U.S. Sen. Susan Collins says she will decide this week if she's running.

Maine's current governor, Paul LePage, a Trump ally, would have appointed a replacement for Collins if she made a decision to leave the Senate. Collins said previously that she'd like to heal the state and "bring people back together".

Collins was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1996, and she has remained as one of Maine's representatives in Washington, D.C. since then.

Last year, Collins announced she would not vote for Donald Trump in the presidential election, and she has been critical of the president in the past.

Contemplating whether to give up her seniority in the United States Senate and the influence it grants, has been a major factor in her decision. She chairs the Senate Select Committee on Aging and the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee, and also serves on the Intelligence Committee as well as the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, according to her office's web site.

Collins grew up in Caribou, in far northern Maine.

But a gubernatorial bid by Collins would also have been risky - the biggest threat coming from within her own party. Most famously, she played a crucial role this summer in dooming his goal of repealing the Affordable Care Act.

And many Mainers have strong opinions about what Collins should do.

In a much-anticipated announcement regarding her home state's governor race, Maine Sen.

The Republican senator said she made her decision based on where she could do the most for ME and the country. Since Mr. Trump became president, she has voted less often with her party than any other Republican senator.

LePage criticized Collins this year for saying Indiana's plan to expand Medicaid could be a model for Maine.
