Samsung brings in Silicon Valley expert to make Bixby relevant

Have you tried Samsung Bixby yet?

The Bixby development group's current head, Rhee In-jong, who is also the Chief Technology Officer of the company, is believed to be replaced by Chung but Samsung quickly denied the idea. Samsung, however, promised that Bixby would offer the same access to 3rd party applications, and according to the Korea Herald, this will be one of the main features of the improved app.

Before joining the group, Chung led a mobile platform and solution lab at Samsung Research America located in Silicon Valley from 2015.

Before Chung joined Samsung in 2011, he worked for Ericsson and is credited for being the software expert behind Samsung Pay as well as the software security Knox. It adds that the company could expand the Bixby digital assistant to new third-party products beyond smartphones.

Samsung's very own digital assistant, Bixby, hasn't exactly been well-received; it faced quite a number of delays and isn't quite up to par to its competition.

Comparing to other existing virtual assistants such as Google Assistant and Siri, Bixby is not really performing up to par with its rivals. This button, which lacks any official remapping ability and until recently couldn't even be disabled, is easy to press accidentally.

We're hoping it will be unveiled at the tech giant's Developer Conference happening this October 18 in San Francisco.

Samsung first made Bixby available in the company's home country this year and it was later rolled out across the globe in August with Korean and English languages. The release of Bixby 2.0 could finally make the AI virtual assistant more useful to the users of Galaxy S8 [VIDEO], S8 Plus and the newly launched Galaxy Note 8. Rhee played a big roll in the launch of Bixby, but also works in Samsung's mobile payment and mobile health categories, as well.
