Rick Pitino files federal lawsuit against Adidas

Rick Pitino files federal lawsuit against Adidas

"I had no part - active, passive, or through willful ignorance - in the conspiracy described in the complaint", Pitino said in an affidavit submitted to the Louisville board at Monday's meeting, per ESPN.

Documents from Pitino's lawyer show that the former Louisville coach, who was sacked this week following a widespread NCAA corruption bust, texted with Adidas exec Jim Gatto and tried to score some "Zebra" style Adidas Yeezy Boost 350s.

Recently fired Louisville men's basketball coach Rick Pitino is suing Adidas in an apparent attempt to clear his name after a bribery scandal hit the school.

"I had no part - active, passive, or through willful ignorance - in the conspiracy described in the complaint".

Pitino alleges Adidas caused him damages by "conspiring to funnel money to the family of a college basketball recruit...all without Coach Pitino's knowledge, participation, or acquiescence".

"Mr. Pitino's lawsuit is clearly a reaction to his termination yesterday and is without merit", an Adidas spokesperson shot back in a statement to Business Insider.

Pitino is demanding judgment against Adidas for punitive damages to his reputation because of Adidas' "oppression, malice, or fraud".

Pitino reportedly stands to lose the $44 million remaining in salary and bonuses on his contract through the 2025-26 season since he was sacked with cause.

No individual coach at Louisville was named in the F.B.I.'s findings, but the university is mentioned in the US vs. James Gatto complaint. Coach-2 is believed to be Pitino, though the coach has denied knowing anything of the alleged scheme.
